Last week, I had the opportunity to participate in the URJ Biennial Convention, with nearly 6,000 other Reform Jews. It was one of the most incredible Jewish experiences that I have ever participated in. I had the opportunity to learn from top Jewish scholars, network with colleagues throughout North America, and hear some unforgetable speakers.
One of the main highlights of the Biennial was President Barack Obama’s visit. I sat in the room with tears in my eyes as he addressed many of the ideas and concerns I have as a Jewish educator, a member of the Jewish community, and an American citizen. Ellen Cohen’s Gan (Kindergarten) class has been hard at work preparing for Hanukkah! This past week, they learned about the parts of the chanukkiah (menorah), and created beautiful chanukkiot out of crayons. Not only did they create beautiful pieces of Jewish art, but they were recycling as well! Check out the photos of their art project:
Mrs. Gallo’s third grade Religious School class is hosting a pet supplies drive as their class tzedakah project, to help out the animals awaiting homes at the Montgomery County SPCA in Conshohocken. Mrs. Gallo’s class will be donating their tzedakah money to the SPCA and personally delivering all the supplies they collect.The SPCA depends on the support of the community to be able to give the best possible care to the animals awaiting homes, and we hope you’ll help us out. Here is a list of items we will be collecting:
Please bring your donations to the Religious School office by March 1. We would also appreciate donations to our class tzedakah fund for the SPCA. Checks may be made out to the Montgomery County SPCA. |
Last month, our fourth grade teachers gave their students a special task:
Collect food and basic necessities to help a member of the greater Jewish community who is less fortunate than we are.
As you can see from the pictures, the response was overwhelming. Almost all of our students contributed to help this woman who they did not even know! It is wonderful to know that we, as parents and teachers, can teach our children the valuable lesson of helping those less fortunate then ourselves.
Between the hurricane and the nonstop rain this summer, we may have wished that an ark would come and rescue us, much as it did for Noah and his family in the Torah.
However, since it has not rained for 40 days in a long time, we (luckily) do not have to worry about fitting every type of animal in the world onto an ark. Instead, we can enjoy the following video about Noah and celebrate every time we see a rainbow.

Ms. Silverman’s first grade class has taken a very hands-on approach to learning the Alef-Bet (the Hebrew alphabet). The students practice “Hebrew Yoga,” in which they make the shapes of the letters they have learned out of their bodies. In addition, they have worked together as a class to make giant Hebrew letters out of their bodies. Check out the photos below!Simchat Torah begins tonight! 4th grade is off and running for a great year!
We have wonderful Teen Aides – Ben and Gabby.
In Hebrew, we have already completed our 1st goal, the Barechu prayer. We are also building a Hebrew vocabulary list. We have learned the Hebrew for terms such as What’s up, How are you, Thank you very much, Good morning, Good, Very good, No and Yes.
In our Israel studies, we are reading about Israel from our text. Students have just been assigned our first class project.The students will research a city in Israel and then teach this city to the class. Each student will also design a game board. We will then play all the game boards in class as a review of each city. Projects will begin in mid November.
We are now ready to start reading the Torah stories, the first being Creation. We have already learned the names of the 5 Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. We know that the person who writes the Torah is called a Sofer and must follow strict guidelines when writing a Torah.
The students have been very conscientious in bringing in Tzedakah. Several options will be offered in the next few weeks for where we would like to donate.
All this has happened and it’s only the first month! We are looking forward to a lot more learning and fun.
